40pin FC-AL Fibre / Fiber Channel Hard Drive28 May 2009 21:31 GMT4
I've recently come into possession of some Fibre Channel 40 pin drives
(ST3146807FC).  These are FC-AL, unfortunately I misinterpreted the
specs on a controller I was looking at before I snagged the drives.
Any suggestions as to what sort of host controllers I might look at
Addonics Storage Towers? Good/Bad?27 May 2009 14:24 GMT2
I have been looking everywhere for reasonably cheap (cost wise) esata/
usb, 4bay, RAID 1 storage solutions and while there are some
undisputedly top notch options out there they seem to start at $500 on
up and none seem to support 2tb internal drives.
SMD-E specification wanted26 May 2009 01:01 GMT4
Does anyone have a copy of the SMD-E Interface Specification, which is
CDC/Imprimis/Seagate document 64712402?  The spec for the earlier SMD
interface is on Bitsavers, but it doesn't look like the SMD-E spec is there.
Thanks!

Why don't they make HDDs and platters like this?23 May 2009 07:46 GMT12
Why don't computers companies make and sell platters individually in
stores?
CD-Rs and DVD-Rs are sold like that. So why not make HDDs with push-
open slots like with CDs?
Should Core 2 Duo CPU not be theoretically slower than single core with double MHz?23 May 2009 05:25 GMT2
I wonder why a two-core CPU with lets say 2 * 1.7 Mhz is theoretically faster
than a single core with 3.4 MHz. I am NOT talking about additional features like
Pipeling and Hyperthreading but the core fact that the power is split over two cores.
Assume the following situation: A ...

Why is disk performance occasionally so slow?19 May 2009 23:32 GMT11
I'm running XP Pro on an ASUS A8N-SLI with AMD X2 4200.
Every weekend I do a full backup.
For speed, I create the first backup to an internal Samsung 1TB F1 drive -
one of the current fastest drives.
Reading sectors on a RAID19 May 2009 22:02 GMT1
I have set up a RAID5 with 4 x 1TB disks and a SiL3132r5 controller.
It works well as a logical 2.9TB NTFS drive using Vista Business.
I am trying to read sectors to their own and have hit a problem.
I open the drive either as Drive G  \\.\G:  or \\.\Phys2.  Either way

stacking 2.5" hard drives on top of one another10 May 2009 03:23 GMT16
Whenever I get a new laptop, I sell my old laptop (sans the hard
drive, which I keep in storage) on eBay.  I now have three 2.5" hard
drives just sitting around and to consolidate space, I've stacked them
