Windows stripping & performance31 Mar 2009 21:34 GMT2
Our software developers are starting to use VMware workstation as a matter
of course to run various development environments at the same time. Our
current standard of 32 bit Windows XP limits us to 3GB of memory so we're
considering switching to 64 bit Vista with 6GB memory.
SATA power connector voltages?30 Mar 2009 15:09 GMT16
Now I just got myself a new power supply tester doohickey. It tests all
kinds of cables and cords coming out of power supplies, including SATA
ones. According to it, a SATA cable should see +12V, +5V, and +3.3V. Now
my power supply doesn't have any native SATA cables, so I've ...

I was reading about the Solar storm of 1859 on wikipedia.org and about
how really massive solar storms can fry electronics and...  I'm
curious...  what could one do to protect against a hard drive against
this?  As I understand it, placing an object in a faraday cage should

USB external drive keeps disappearing25 Mar 2009 20:46 GMT7
From all the hype it sounded like a USB external HD was a better choice
than a second IDE or SATA internal drive, so I got an iMicro 1TB drive to
store my backups and recover some data from a partially disabled drive.
The darn thing came with a 5-page pamphlet written in Engrish:  ...
Problem with phantom files on MemStickDuo23 Mar 2009 03:35 GMT4
I have a 2 gig non-Sony Memstick ProDuo which seems only to be able to
hold 1 gig.  After that it writes broken files.  Full sized but
broken.   So it can write a 50 gig video file but as soon as it starts
to read it, the read stops. No amount of self-formatting can help this

I looked on the Seagate web site and all I found was this:
Do defraggers do a CHKDSK first?17 Mar 2009 09:11 GMT9
Does a defragger, such as PerfectDisk, perform the equivalent of a
CHKDSK before defragging?
If not, then should I be running CHKDSK before every defrag?

Why does copying files to a new hard drive not defragment it?15 Mar 2009 19:30 GMT30
Well, I execute a series disk upgrades on my system yesterday and today.
I copied the contents of two drives to two other new drives. Each new
drive was obviously empty and freshly formatted beforehand. My
assumption was that copying the entire contents of each older drive
