I have been wondering if there is an storge device that has the read access speed and the convenience of an HD with the safety of DVDR backups. I have been looking into SD Hard Drives, however, those seem to have their own issues.

The hard disk stores a byte by some kind of magnetism. If I don't touch that byte on the disk for a long time, would it lose magnetism and hence that byte of information? After how long would that happen?
