S-ATA drive not accessible to some stand-alone utilities..29 Feb 2008 01:11 GMT4
A friend of mine brought his Compaq 6820s laptop for some maintenance
and configuration work.  More specifically, he wants to split the 250Gb
C: drive in smaller partitions.
The drive is an Hitachi Travelstat 5K250 - HTS542525K9SA00 S-ATA disk.

How to made XP add SATAII HDD to hardware list24 Feb 2008 17:48 GMT10
Previously my Western Digital SATA HDD had problem. I replaced a new

my Gigabyte GA-8S655FX motherboard. The BIOS settings for SATA were
set as below:

Could someone here tell me if partition numbers are
ordered from the outer tracks to the inner tracks of
a hard disk, or from inner to outer?  IOW, is partition
#1 on the outer or inner tracks?
Western Digital Raptor strange noise/vibration23 Feb 2008 08:11 GMT5
Using the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics (most recent
download from their website).
Running the QUICK TEST on my new 150 GB Raptor produces zero errors,
but it also produces noise like a manual transmission car getting up
WD5000AAKB hard drives. Why so cheap?22 Feb 2008 18:04 GMT3
I've been looking at a number of UK online retailers, and their prices
for Western Digital WD5000AAKB (500GB, 16MB cache, PATA) hard disks
all seem to be about 10% less than those for other 500GB disks,
including the WD5000AAJB (8MB cache). Have any reliability issues been

All of a suddent, the PC can't mount some USB devices I connect to it.
One 2GB pen drive that mounted OK before stopped mounting. But

A replaced 500GB Seagate SATA connected with SATA to USB adapter won't
Does an external USB hard disc need at least one primary partition ?20 Feb 2008 09:28 GMT7
I bought a new external hard disc which I plan to connect through USB in order to backup
some of my files/directories.
Before using I must create some partitions. Now I am wondering wether I need at least a dummy
primary partition on this hard disc.

Hard drive-based backup in lieu of tape backup18 Feb 2008 20:44 GMT4
We've just reached the point with our single-tape backup drive where
we have too much data to back up on a single-tape drive.  Our backup
has now reached 4 tapes, so the backup procedure is simply taking too
long for our business to function at the level it needs to.
