Does first-generation SATA hot-plug without killing the mobo, the disk, or both? I've got a PC with an ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe mobo with SATA on it. It's on the bench and I have several SATA disks I want to run disk fitness

I have a Maxtor 160GB 3.5" drive in a USB/Firewire external case (chipset Prolific 3507). When I try to use Norton Disk Doctor on it, the test stalls at 43% complete, every time. I tried Check Disk on it and that also stalls, both in Windows and upon reboot before Windows

I currently have 3 2.5" USB external drives (all under 160gb). I use one for a bootable backup, one to back up my data and one for my pictures (I'm Wedding photographer). As the drives are physically small and run directly off the USB bus off

| Access RAID-0 data from dead Asus A7N8X2.0 mobo with Silicon Image RAID controller? | 21 Aug 2007 18:08 GMT | 11 |
I believe my Asus A7N8X2.0 (deluxe) motherboard is damaged, because the system would not shut down for three weeks and now it will not boot my system disk. The fans turn, but the after five seconds, the system seems to restart. I never see the bios screens.

| Promise 20265 not recognising IDE disks > 60 Gb | 20 Aug 2007 22:27 GMT | 6 |
Hi, on my ECS L7VTA1.1 Motherboard, there are two standard IDE connections, as well as two Promise connections (IDE3&4) linked to a Promise 20265 Controller. Obviously these can be used for RAID configuring, but I'm not using RAID at all, and I've used over the past couple of ...

| Hard Drive Failure | 20 Aug 2007 19:47 GMT | 6 |
Can anyone tell me if going through 5 hard drives in 7 yeas, same box, is abnormal? I have lost an IBM, a Hitachi, and three Seagates. A friend says there must be something else wrong, and that to loose so many drives is abnormal.

| NEW HDD? | 20 Aug 2007 05:17 GMT | 12 |
I had 2 hard drives in my desktop. One died ( 40gb), and the other still lives (an IBM 12GB, DESKSTAR TITAN 3.5' Ultra ATA). I lost my windows and everything on the 1st one. Life continued with the IBM intact. Now I want to buy a new HDD, and transfer everything

| round ide cables | 20 Aug 2007 04:22 GMT | 7 |
I am cleaning up an old computer and am going to replace the ide cables. I am debating with myself whether to use round ide or flat ribbon cable... I can get a good price on 24" round IDE, but as the 24" is longer than the 18" spec.

| RAID 0 in external hard drive | 17 Aug 2007 15:06 GMT | 2 |
Is there anyway to create RAID 0 using two external SATA hard drives? If yes, since the external SATA drives have their own power button what would occur if I switch off one of the disk? Thanks,

| Vista partitioning strategy | 17 Aug 2007 12:36 GMT | 1 |
I'm going to use a 160GB (one disk) windows vista ultimate notebook(4GB ram). Regardless of what some "experts" state about disk fragmentation, I've noticed that packing "similar" data on multiple partition, fastens defragmentation.

| corrupt raid 5, repair/recreate raid? | 14 Aug 2007 16:02 GMT | 10 |
I have 3 hard disks in a raid 5 and yesterday, one of the disk "failed". So I selected the option to repair the raid on the drive (which has worked before), and after about 2 hours, it blue screened my computer. now it will not boot up, as the WHOLE raid has failed.
