Any experience with SATA port selectors?31 Dec 2006 22:15 GMT3
I've found a couple of products on the market (from Marvell and Exar -
not clear whether they're chips or pluggable products), but not much
other information - e.g., whether these, or any others which may be
available, are something close enough to enterprise-grade to use in a
spec of mounting screws for internal drives?31 Dec 2006 19:06 GMT3
I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me the spec of the mounting screws used
on internal drives i.e. 3.5 and 2.5 inch hard drives, CD/DVD Drives, floppy
drives.
I realise that some drives can only accept a specific length but is it a
4x500GB RAID31 Dec 2006 13:39 GMT3
Do Seagate 500GB 7200.9 and 7200.10 SATA-2 hard disks have exactly the
same number of guaranteed sectors? If so, can I use two of each in a
RAID-0?
Midrange storage - EMC, Network Appliance, HP30 Dec 2006 15:47 GMT4
I'm looking at several mid-range storage products and am interested in
anecdotal experience that people in this group may have had with these
products.  This storage will provide storage for email (unix mail app),
database (oracle), vmware, and file serving applications.  Our
Silent fibre channel switch30 Dec 2006 15:46 GMT3
I am building a fibre channel san. I need to put it in a single room
(no dedicated server room).
I have seen that some fibre channel switch are very noisy because they
have high speed fan to keep them cold.

Basic SAN Question (Adding vdisk to Win2k3)29 Dec 2006 03:23 GMT1
I have created a new vdisk in my MSA1000 disk array. I have also
assigned it to the server "xyz" (there are two other vdisks for this
server that are already setup) but I am not sure how to setup it up in
Windows 2003...??? Confused. Some guidance will be appreciated.

Western Digital My Book 500GB Not Installing on my WIndows XP, Help?28 Dec 2006 05:39 GMT12
I just pcked up a Western Digital My Book 5000GB Essential Edition.
According to the install guide WIndows XP should automatically
recoginize the drive when connected. I've had no such luck. The drive
does not show up when connected. A "New Hardware" found shows up when
hard drive storage27 Dec 2006 23:36 GMT14

offsite - Does anyone have a recommendation for wrapping / packing for
medium to long term storage - I was thinking of individual bubble wrap &

Why does hd defrag work when they work on virtual/logical blocks rather than physical?27 Dec 2006 22:28 GMT17
I completely understand the logic behind defragmentation but I simply
don't understand how it could work given the hard-drives internal block
mapping. If the hard drive assigns logical blocks 1, 2, and 3 to
physical blocks 20, 132, and 88 respectively, then what good is it if
Bad Sector Count27 Dec 2006 19:12 GMT16
My Win XP Pro PC suffered a BSOD yesterday telling me that part of the
registry was corrupted.  I restored the OS from my Acronis True Image
backup but the bad sector count has increased from 3 to 5.  Not knowing
much about these things, is it time to buy a new HDD?
