RAID 5 toast?31 Oct 2006 12:57 GMT16
I have a RAID 5 setup with four SCSI disks.  Two have failed.  Am I
right
that the data is completely unrecoverable?  Was just wondering
if it's possible to run some kind of utility on at least one of the
requesting advice about DIY data recovery31 Oct 2006 06:23 GMT9
I had an IBM Travelstar 30GN hard disk in my laptop.  Despite the
model number it was actually a 20GB drive.  It started making scary
grinding noises and I called IBM about RMA'ing it.  They asked me to
run the SMART diagnostics and it passed.  They then told me that noise
Destroying Old Media30 Oct 2006 23:29 GMT14
Perhaps an odd question... We've found a set of really old DAT and DDS
backup tapes that we have neither the backup software nor the drives to
read/write. However, labels indicate these may contain sensitive data.
How would I go about destroying these w/o investment or illegal ...
A drive previously working as slave all of a sudden decides not to?30 Oct 2006 23:07 GMT5
Some wierd things were happening on a relative's PC recently. I had
setup this PC for them originally, and they said they were having
trouble booting anymore, none of the drives were seen. I had two drives
on the primary channel, a 60G master and an older 20G slave. They were

My flash drive (Memorex) is no longer detected when I insert it into the USB
drive of my desktop (WinXP pro SP2).   It works fine with my laptop, but
does not even detect on the desktop.
I tried other USB memory devices with the desktop and they work fine - so
Terastation Help30 Oct 2006 10:11 GMT2
I've purchased a couple of Buffalo Terastation Home Servers (2TB). I'm
generally pleased with them and even though they take an age to fill on
Raid 5, I was prepared for that.
Most of the stuff I need to get on them currently resides on a variety

Smallest microSD USB Stick reader28 Oct 2006 17:04 GMT8
Ever thought of owning an upgradable and small USB Flash drive?
I'm looking for the Smallest microSD (OR miniSD) USB Stick reader with
a hole for a keyring or lanyard. By smallest, I mean a drive that can
be easily inserted when other USB devices are plugged. This is an

Secondaryl NT4 not getting past boot menu27 Oct 2006 22:33 GMT3
Have WinNT4W(SP6) installed on the first partition of the
system's 2nd internal IDE HDD (on the secondary master channel) for use
in an emergency to repair the primary Win2000 Pro OS. The file
<boot.ini> was modified to accomodate the (secondary) WinNT4W OS and is
Beware of Acronis Hanging Up Your Computer27 Oct 2006 19:19 GMT3
It happened to me so many times, I am giving up using the
Startup Manager and the OS Selector. Both can hang up your computer
disallowing you from loading Windows. This is a very ridiculous and
inexcusable situation. The Startup Manager does not allow you to load

Normally the desktop has an IDE hdd setup as primary master. I have used a
half dozen different IDE hdd's in this desktop without noticing radio
interference.

WinXP is fine, but Win98se cannot see anything above 137GB.
After some research, I discovered that my motherboard has a VIA
