External RAID hardware recommendations - Promise, JetStor, Nexsan...11 Jan 2006 18:59 GMT2
We selected the Promise VTrak 300i primarily to store disk-to-disk
backups, and secondarily as storage for Exchange and application
servers. I've since heard from suppliers that Promise has terrible
customer support. Vendors have suggested JetStor or Nexsan as better
one PCB spins the drive the other  does not!11 Jan 2006 01:40 GMT5
..when testing 2 good PCBs with same  firmware on a previously dead
quantum disk(with possiblly different firmware).
Is it possible one has more powerfull chips, and also another
question-does the whacking sound after spin up indicate damaged head
What is SPIFFI10 Jan 2006 06:58 GMT2
What is SPIFFI and what is its relation to storage system? When I start
Qlogic's SANSurfer Pro HBA management software, its gives me a warning
that the attached device (an IBM DS4300) is non-SPIFFI compliant.
Product documentation doesn't throw much light on it.
MB with onboard RAID failed -- how not to lose data?09 Jan 2006 19:08 GMT4
I have a pretty simple question, and I'm sure there's an easy answer
for it, but I can't figure one out on my own.
How can I save my RAID array when the motherboard that housed the
onboard raid controller (HPT372) is dead?
Fragility of 5.25" Diskettes09 Jan 2006 18:57 GMT18
I've got a bunch of old 5.25" diskettes and I've got a few questions
about the fragility of them.
I know that if you touch the magnetic part of the disk while it's out
of the sleeve with your finger or something, you've just screwed the
"My computer will not read primary slsve09 Jan 2006 18:43 GMT1
My machine was working with two CDs and two HDDs.  then it stopped
reading the slave drives.  Then it started restarting repeatedly during
startup, never completeing the startup. I tried the repair procedure
using the W2000 CD, to no avail. This was with W2000.
Icy Box running 12 hours a day?09 Jan 2006 16:24 GMT1
I'm thinking of using my Icy Box external USB drive, that has Maxtor
Diamondmax Plus 8 40Gb drive with an Linksys NSLU2, this means it will
be running 12-14 hours a day. I have noticed that the Icy Box gets
quiet warm/almost 'hot' when on for a few hours.
Lost a patition..... help ....09 Jan 2006 15:38 GMT4

partition (58Gb) works fine, but the secondary partition is lost.
When  look in windows disc-management it finds the 200Gb harddisk just fine,
men only my C-drive is listet in "my computer".
SATA hard disk & 2 DVD drives - separate IDE connectors for DVD's?09 Jan 2006 09:05 GMT1
I'm building a new computer with an SATA hard disk for the operating
system.  My only IDE  devices are a DVD burner and a DVD ROM.
I think it would be best to put one DVD drive on each IDE port, each
with it's own 80-wire cable.  It would add clutter inside the computer
WD 250 GB USB2/Firewire external hard drives08 Jan 2006 10:59 GMT5
I am having trouble with one of my external WD 250 GB external hard
drives.   I am getting this loud clicking noise when my backup writes
to it.  Windows XP SP2 keeps on giving an error message for writing
the H:\$MFT file which does not sound good to me at all.  I have the
determining if hdd head electronics is ok?07 Jan 2006 10:52 GMT2
Need to try replacing the damaged drive pcb and would like to find out
if electronics inside the drive (head preamps etc..) are ok to avoid
the possibility of burning the good pcb.How likely is this to happen if
the drive was invisible by bios and would not spin with it's damaged
Raid5 sanity check06 Jan 2006 22:07 GMT5
I have responsibility for a Ibm X360 server with ServeRAID 7k controller.
It has a 6 drive backplane and a 3 drive backplane. We have 4 drives
configured in Raid5, with a single logical drive containing the system and
data partitions. We would like to add more capacity to the ...
running too hot?06 Jan 2006 19:03 GMT42
Hello. Regarding a prior post, this is the second hard drive in this
machine that has had physical problems in the last 6 months. I wonder
if it is a power or heat problem. I was fairly sure that the first was
due to the fact that his room gets way too hot and the computer also
Backup strategy: to re-partition or not to re-partition06 Jan 2006 18:48 GMT4
After a clean install of Windows XP, and before re-installing
everything, I backed up my 120 gig C drive by making an image with
Drive Image.  I'd like to be able to revert to that state if necessary.
I keep the clean image of C on my second hard drive, along with a
