Best program for forecasting crash30 Jun 2005 23:43 GMT6
I've used the Drive Fitness Test that's made for my Hitachi hard drive
that uses S.M.A.R.T, and I've also used Spinrite to try to fix sector
problems. Can anyone tell me if these are the best programs to tell
you if your drive might be about to crash, or are there better
Cannot access Lacie ethernet disk30 Jun 2005 21:21 GMT1
I just purchased a Lacie ethernet disk 400 GB in size and I'm having some
trouble with it.
After setting up the device (and reading the manual) I tried to access a
share but was unable to.
Tape Libraries - Which one to buy?30 Jun 2005 20:24 GMT2
The ultimate question...  We are implementing a new production system
and need to determine which vendor to go with for the tape library.  We
need the capacity to back up approximately 50TB weekly across four tape
pools, and are looking at a minimum of 300-cartridge libraries.
Hard drive errors and vibrating computer30 Jun 2005 19:27 GMT7
I sometimes shake my leg in a nervous manner because, well I'm a
nervous person and I notice my computer shaking a little bit as I
shake my leg on the floor sometimes. Is this bad for the hard drive
when it is writing to it? I mean I have bad sectors on the hard drive
Switch to DVD backup media from CD?30 Jun 2005 19:26 GMT111
For about six years, I've been backing up computer data onto CD media.
Initially, I wasn't too careful with my backups, making no after-checks
and buying cheap media, although I've learnt from my mistakes in modern
times. As I'm not keen to lose the data I'm backing, I only buy
Two Disk Failures a Co-Incidence30 Jun 2005 14:42 GMT10
Two 2U servers in a rack in a machine room.  One does the real work,
the other is a "warm" standby.  They are about 30 months
old, with SCSI disks.
Just after midnight, one server crashes: nothing is logged, but the
system does not see my new hard drive30 Jun 2005 12:56 GMT4
I have a 300Mhz PII computer with a WD 6.4 Gb hard drive. I added a
20.5 Gb IBM Deskstar as a slave. The system does not recognize it.
Any suggestions?
Changing HD controllers30 Jun 2005 11:39 GMT2
When I remove the ribbon cables from a PCI HD controller (in my case an
ultra66) onto the mobo's 33 onboard controller, do I have to reinstall the
driver first, or does the driver handle that mode? I've never changed
controllers before.
External Enclosure Power Does Not Work (set up problem or hard disk is bad?)30 Jun 2005 06:04 GMT2
Hello, I just bought an external enclosure for my 80GB Maxtor hard
disk, but I have trouble setting it up. I set the hard disk to be
master and connected the IDE Connector and Power Molex correctly to the
hard disk. However, when I turned on the power of the enclosure, it
Spinrite analyzing hard drive slow30 Jun 2005 01:30 GMT29
On the Spinrite page it says it performs hard drive analysis at 2GB's
a minute, so about an hour or more for a 125GB drive, but when I start
analyzing it goes extremely slow and says estimated time is 36 hours.
Why is it going so slow? My hard drive is not old, it is only about

WD drives have errors caused by CRT29 Jun 2005 17:45 GMT36
I'll ask the question I can get an answer for first, and describe
the background/rant/how it happened further down.
I have WD400 and WD800 EIDE drives that scandisk has detected
hundreds of bad clusters on. Watching its operation (W98, running
Time to spin down from 7200 RPM?29 Jun 2005 08:11 GMT5
Judging from the sound, the brakes on HDD's seem to stop them in under 10
seconds.  How long do you wait after shutdown of an external drive before
moving it?
backup spanning across multiple network HDs?29 Jun 2005 03:43 GMT3
I can't seem to find a programm that does this.
I have a server with 4HDs, lets say 15GB each. I have a desktop with a
55 GB HD.
Now i want to backup the desktop 55 GB HD to the server...
