wipe hd clean28 Feb 2005 23:44 GMT38
Hello to all. I'm sure this question had been asked a million times and I
am sorry to be repetitive, but the state of the art continually changes and
I want to be up to speed.
I am taking the HD out of my work-issue laptop and giving it to a
Are SATA drives as reliable as PATA in IDE Mode?28 Feb 2005 23:38 GMT4
I just got an Intel 865PERL mobo which uses the 865PE / ICH5R chipset.  I'm
trying to decide between PATA or SATA hard drives.  Would SATA drives be any
less reliable? I plan to have two drives but in a non-RAID configuration.
I've heard rumors about data corruption issues with ...
transferring bbc micro adfs/dfs 5.25" disks to pc.28 Feb 2005 21:42 GMT1
transferring bbc micro adfs/dfs 5.25" disks to pc. and being able to read
them. I am familiar with using a beeb emulator but unsure of how to transfer
and read the data. instead of getting hold of a bbc micro.
is there a 5.25" disk drive available for the pc, and will it read ...
Dead WD, PCB replace a viable fix?28 Feb 2005 20:03 GMT3
I have a WD1200JB drive that I accidentally fried when I rewired a
Molex connector the wrong way around (red and yellow wires were
swapped - 5v became 12v and vice versa).
Needless to say the drive died rather quickly and hasn't spun up
Western Digital hard drive lost power28 Feb 2005 20:00 GMT1
It seems as though I have a hard-drive that has lost power ... I cannot hear it
spinning and cannot access the 3 volumes on it. I was wondering if anyone has had
experience with this type hard-drive failure and who (what company) would be a reliable
source for recovering the ...
1 dedicated drive (mirrored), or thin stripe for redo filesystems?28 Feb 2005 17:03 GMT2
I'm in the process of setting up some DB hosts and storage, and I'm
looking for some guidelines for setting up our redolog LUNs.
I have 2 approaches for this, and I'm unsure which one is best from a
performance standpoint:
Fujitsu LED jumper28 Feb 2005 16:32 GMT4
The jumpers for the SCSI Fujitsu drives I have (MAT, MAS, MAP) are
smaller than usual (Maybe it is typical for SCSI).  The connectors I
have in my case and hard drive mounting kits for connecting to the LED
jumper(s) are made for jumpers that have slightly more spread in the
lpfc configurations/Clariion CX how to?28 Feb 2005 13:52 GMT6

CIFS "Directory Change Notification" support28 Feb 2005 05:43 GMT2
I'm wondering to what extent popular NAS and SAN devices support the
Directory Change Notification feature of the CIFS/SMB protocol. I know that
anything running Windows does support it, and I think SAMBA doesn't, but am
curious about the other devices, e.g. NetApp, Adaptec, etc.
Hidden 64mb Logfile?28 Feb 2005 02:42 GMT7
I ran this little prog called 'Rootkitrevealer' and it shows files
hidden from the Windows API. I noticed every partition has a 64mb
Logfile. What the hell does Microsoft hide in there?
You can get the prog from www.sysinternals.com if you don't have it
Choosing Optical Drives27 Feb 2005 11:57 GMT1
I'm considering getting an NEC 3520A DVD burner and a Samsung TS-H352A
DVD-ROM drive (also known as the Toshiba SD-M1912) . Both would be connected
to my mobo's secondary IDE channel. Is this a good pairing?
Also, would I be better off choosing the same brand for both burner and ...
adding more PCI slots?27 Feb 2005 05:54 GMT12
Is it possible to somehow add more PCI slots?  Even temporarily?  Most motherboards now come with a max
of 5.  If you're using 2 extra monitors (PCI video cards with your AGP), a SCSI controller, a Firewire if
your mb or soundcard doesn't have it, a good soundcard, a hardware modem ...
Restoring registry?26 Feb 2005 23:58 GMT3
I have backups of my harddrive.   I was messing with the registry and would
like to restore it before my edits.  What file(s) would I have to copy over
on to the harddrive to replace the registry?.
The Microsoft restore feature for some reason lost all its restore points
Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus26 Feb 2005 21:48 GMT6
I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus 80GB harddrive which seems to have a
strange problem. The drive is FAT32 formated and worked fine until one
day i saw the error message "unable to write to drive"(the disk was
nearly 50% full) i ran M$ Scandisk and everything was okay but only for
