Planning on building 1st computer10 Mar 2007 20:55 GMT17
It seems like, if I want exactly what I want in a PC, I'm going to have
to build it myself.  I've never done this before and I'm looking at it
as a daunting task (I want a very fast PC, upgradable, with the best
components).  Guess a good place to start is with this newsgroup. Could

I've got an HP Pavilion 4535 that I've pulled all of the innards out of.
Motherboard is a "MEW-VM rev 1.02".  My research shows that this is likely
an Asus OEM board made specifically for HP to use in a number of their small
tower configurations.  There are a number of hookups ...

I am trying to get a NEC NL10276BC28-05D panel working with a Commell
LV-677 motherboard.  I know the panel is in working condition, but no
matter what I try, I can seem to get any video to show up on the

Any known issues with Dell computers and ISA bus functionality?09 Mar 2007 23:10 GMT12
I've got a 16-bit ISA card (part of a specialty piece of data
acquisition equipment) that I know works in several different
mainstream motherboards (Soyo, Tyan, Gigabyte, etc).
It doesn't function correctly in a computer that I've been asked to
Can Anyone Recommend a Good PC Builder?09 Mar 2007 22:41 GMT17
Hi: Well...I use to use Monarch Computer Systems for barebones builds,
but they are RIP. I use to watch this board all of the time & there
was a guy that posted a lot in here that is a system builder. I forget
his company name. He wasn't the cheapest, but people seemed to like

I have an old 166Mhz Pentium with 128 MB or RAM which I was using as a

around to getting all my computers set up and connected. On this box,
DOS or USB based RAM Checker09 Mar 2007 22:17 GMT3
I suspect my desktop PC at work has bad memory chip(s).  Our Dell warranty
just ran out.  The DELL boot or utility partition only has a diagnostic mode
for the IDE drives not RAM.  I would like to run a floppy or USB Thumb Drive
based RAM diagnostic checker for it. Can anyone ...
cleaning inside PC with vacuum cleaner09 Mar 2007 17:38 GMT36
I once read that cleaning inside the PC case with a vacuum cleaner creates a
hazard of electrostatic discharge (ESD).  I have never done it.  I have
always found other ways to accomplish the cleaning I wanted to do, however
I'm thinking a vacuum cleaner might be OK depending on ...
UPS question09 Mar 2007 17:35 GMT11
Tonight at 2:30am my wife's UPS started beeping. I went into the office
and found that the "on battery" LED from the APC Back-UPS CS 350 was on.
Power was on, and my UPS had not tripped. So, I turned it off and tried
to turn it back on again. It beeped once, but no LEDs lit up.  ...
