On accasion in some emails, pictures show up as a small box in the upper

I was just wondering if LCD monitors typically try to refresh
everything simultaneously.  It might be easier if they did it top
to bottom since data comes in top to bottom, and

My wife's 5 1/2 years old XP laptop had some problems that I traced to a
single bad block (using chkdsk /r /f).
My question is how badly does this bode for the hard drive? Is a single
