My CD ROM drives jsut stopped working one day. They open and close but they do not read the disk. I did a troubleshooter and it says that they are working properly. Any ideas on how to fix this or what is wrong?

I have a damaged HD on my Gateway Profile 1B desktop. Rather than replace the 6 gig HD, which is expensive, I want to buy an external HD, load it with Windows XP, connect it to the Gateway via its USB 1 port and operate from the external HD. Can I do this?

I bought windows xp service pack 2, because MS told me that they wouldn't support windows ME anymore. Once I installed it, I had huge crashes to power off whenever I tried to use my DVD drive or cd drive in windows. It worked fine in linux.

I'm having problem getting an older pentium 4 computer to boot. The power switch doesn't do a thing except light up the power LED on the case. The power supply has a test switch and when I turn that on, the CD Rom, Hard drive and fans come on, but I don't hear the "beep"

I want to make my old computer as silent as possible. I've already replaced cheap fan on chipset with Zalman radiator. Now it's time to replace standard cooler on processor with something less noisy (standard fan on processor runs at 5500RPM and makes me sick).
