I have 3 machines here, all running the same OS with same updates. Computers A and B are connected to a D-Link DGL-4300 by wire, and computer C wirelessly. Windows firewall is disabled, and no other firewall is enabled.

I have a desktop pc, W XP home sp2, no wireless card. I am getting a laptop, W XP home with a wireless LAN card. Do I have to get a router to connect them ( I know nothing) ? or would a USB adapter fitted to the desktop machine work ad hoc ?

I bought a new Netgear FVS318 router for a friend and he has a Sony Vaio with a docking station. When the laptop is in the docking station I cannot get connectivity with the router, if I take the laptop out of the docking station everything is fine.
