MPLS vs VLAN and 802.1q tags for QOS31 Aug 2006 20:02 GMT2
I am trying to understand why the current access networks are going
towards ethernet based systems. We already have MPLS on the core
network side. Now we have ethernet on the access side.
We use VLAN and 802.1q tags for QOS in the ethernet. Why cant we have
LF: Crossover Ethernet Cable 25 feet30 Aug 2006 21:30 GMT3
I'm looking for a crossover cable about 25 feet or 7.5 meters. I would
assume that a place like Nortel should have some of those lying around, if
not someone can easily make it for me. Please name your price. I would
prefer to have it ASAP. Thanks.

I am not sure how best to measure this? Does anyone know if I can get
accurate data from the switch (e.g. via snmp). We have mostly HP switches
Trying to understand 802.1ag / 4 conceptual questions26 Aug 2006 15:42 GMT3
All,
Having fetched the draft 6.1 version of IEEE 802.1ag and trying to
understand it, I ran into some conceptual questions I cannot answer
myself. Maybe there's someone out here able to help?
Dropped packets/broken TCP connections25 Aug 2006 03:37 GMT1
I'm posting this in this group because I believe that this problem
could have something to do with TCP connections not working properly
via our provider. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

vlans - monitoring bandwidth utliization22 Aug 2006 08:56 GMT2
in a simple non-vlan network,
I can pretty well tell how the Ethernet is being utilized
by a variety of techniques - passive & proactive...
But - after splitting things up into vlans,

Roving analysis port on 3com 440018 Aug 2006 21:37 GMT1
Does anyone out there know how to set up the roving analysis port on a
3com 4400? There's no mention of it on the web interface. If I Telnet
in, go to "feature/rovingAnalysis", and use the "add" command, I get
"No ports are available to be used for Roving Analysis."
Going Offline with XP & Linux on same hub17 Aug 2006 16:07 GMT6
I had an odd experience the other day while building a Linux machine.

PVE scernario17 Aug 2006 01:24 GMT7
A time ago Marco in this ng suggested me to use the Linksys SRW2016 PVE
feature to be able to enable/disable internet access in selected
classrooms in a school.  The Linksys manual did not correspond with the
actual web interface for the PVE, but now I think I have figured out ...
Proper way to install shielded ethernet16 Aug 2006 14:24 GMT30
We're having our office rewired; old Cat3 and Cat5 wiring is being replaced
with a shielded Cat6.  (The reason for shielded is another subject
completely and is a done deal, so please, no "Why Shielded?  You don't need
it" posts.  I will say that having a shielded solution is of ...
Simple (I think?) Managed Switch Setup16 Aug 2006 10:11 GMT2
I'm a bit new to managed switches, but am looking to set one up for a
friend of mine that runs a secretarial service and manages the strata
for the building as part of that. At the moment, he has a standard
switch and all of the offices can see each other's computers. What he'd
Can you connect two gigabit fibre NICs together?15 Aug 2006 17:11 GMT19
I've recently gotten hold of a couple of gigabit network cards, and as
they're both fibre cards and I have no experience with fibre, I could
use some advice!
The cards are both Intel PRO/1000 (82542 chipset) and I'd like to use
