Is the Intel PIII 600/512/100 2.05V SLOT 1 SL3F7 the right CPU for a
G6-450 PII.  I have a G6-450 w/ a MBD PII/BX TB2 W/AUD JABIL RI 100FBS
Motherboard. I find a lot of SL3JM but very few SL3F7 stamped on the
side. What is the differenes between the SL3F7 and the SL3JM chips?

That CPU will work fine, and the main difference is simply the revision in
the mask used to lay out the chip on silicon.

What does SR mean in his post following your post mean by "internal
clock multiplier.  SL3F7 is a 550 MHz Pentium III, with a 5.5x hardwired
multiplier.  SL3JM is a 600 MHz Pentium III, with a 6x multiplier."?

One is a 550 MHz CPU, while the other is a 600.  The multiplier determines
the speed. 5.5X100 = 550;  6X100=600.

There aren't that many 600 MHz Slot1 PIIIs -- most were 600E (Coppermines)
that work only with later-model Gateway Slot-1 systems.

OK, now I'm really unsure. I want a 600mhz katmai to put in this old
G6-450. So I must limit my search to those stepped SL3JM?

Why not go for a Powerleap upgrade - instead of 600mhz you can get 1.4ghz?

I upgraded my G6-400 over one year with a Powerleap 1.4ghz and am extremely
satisfied with it.

I get the PIII's free from old discarded systems. If I had to pay for
them I would opt for the Powerleap.

Have you misread the part numbers or made a typo?

These two processors are the same stepping.  The difference between SL3F7 and SL3JM is the internal clock multiplier.  SL3F7 is a 550 MHz Pentium III, with a 5.5x hardwired multiplier.  SL3JM is a 600 MHz Pentium III, with a 6x multiplier.
