dell 1520 or Dell 1720

Greetings. I'm about to purchase a laptop from Dell and I'm choosing between
the Inspiron 1520 and the 1720.

Hardware wise I like the 1720 a lot (especially the 17" screen) but the
downside is that Dell won't put XP on it. It also costs $1300 configured.

The 1520 comes with XP on it but the downside is the integrated graphics
(intel x3100). Cost is around $720.

I'm really new to laptops and this will be my first one. I'll be using it
mainly as a desktop (I'm going to another country so I would rather buy
locall first) so the weight of the laptop is irrelevant. I'll be using it
primarily for games (mostly older games like Quakeworld, Quake 3, Diablo 2
and some modern ones like Doom 3 and Half Life 2). What would your
recommendations be? I would really like to hear from people that own either
one or both. Thanks in advance!

look at the vostros 1500 and 1700 instead.
either can be configured with xp and are identical machines to the
respective inspirons that you express interest.
they are all black instead of one color (of choice) on the outside and
silver on the inside (including silver monitor frame and silver keyboard and
wristpad).  these are heavy laptops but well built and excellent values.

I'd go for the 17", although look at the Vostros too because they have
a 17" that you can order with XP.

If you have a copy of Windows XP from another Dell that you've
purchased, you can likely use it on a 1720, assuming that there are
drivers for the newer hardware.

Keep in mind that this suggestion is not legal and would be considered
theft.

Thanks for the reminder, I should have pointed that out.  At the risk
of bringing up a topic discussed at length here, is it true that the
OS disk follows the label on the computer's enclosure?

I haven't had to deal with this very much because I have a lot of full
versions bought using student discounts (although those might have
limitations too) but I have taken liberties with XP Media Center in
the past because that wasn't sold separately.

Now I use Beyond TV which is much better so I never use the Media
Center features anyway.

Yes, as do any other OEM software packages.

I bought a used E1501 and it has a WinXP Media Edition COA sticker
on the bottom that was unreadable.  No disks with the machine.

I reloaded with a Dell WinXP Pro SP2 OEM cd I had and it worked fine and
didn't ask me to register.
FYI

No, it didn't and it won't.  The Dell CDs will install on any Dell
without activation.

That said, you are effectively 'stealing' a copy of XP Pro, since the
machine only has an MCE license.

Then the question becomes a moral vs. legal question.

Moral doesn't always equal legal of course.

For me, I have almost entirely gone the legal route at home with only
a few exceptions.

When it comes to my professional or volunteer activities though I
always do things legally.

That is getting me in trouble at a volunteer organization that has one
copy of MS Office installed on 6 PCs.  The executive director there
doesn't see it as a problem and we got into an argument about it and
she told me to file a grievance.  I will, and I will also bring it up
at the next board meeting and have it added to that person's job
description to be responsible for making sure that all software on a
computer is licensed.  I will ask the board to give me auditing
powers.

So, it's good to stay legal, although if I had a personal machine with
Vista on it and it was causing problems, and also had a Dell XP disk,
I wouldn't see any problem morally with installing XP on that
computer.

Keep in mind that the larger the screen and the faster the processor, the less
portable and more power hungry the laptop is.    So if you ever expect to travel
a lot with a laptop, a 9 lb unit plus A/C adapter and carrying case will feel
awfully heavy when you drag it from your car to wherever you are going.

Thanks for your helpful suggestions. I have a retail (not OEM) copy of
Windows XP Home SP2 that is currently installed on my desktop but I will
wipe that off the desktop HDD and try to put it on the Dell. I

The Vostros series do look good (especially the 17") but I can't use my dell
preferred card to buy it (have to have a business preferred card) and my
other credit card is maxed out. I really do like the 1700 though!

Dell has drivers for both machines on the web site.

I might also add that since the OP is going to use the system for gaming,
he's going to want a minimum 256mb graphics card, the fastest CPU he can
afford, and a minimum of 2gb of RAM.

Going through  www.dealcatcher.com   I noted there is a $500 off deal on
Vostro 1700's of $1,299.00 or more. So I just threw one together really
quick to get an idea ( the plain text formatting will be butchered, but the
specs and price should be evident / minus tax and shipping):

One nice thing about a 17" laptop is that with remote desktop it gives
you a nice screen in which you can access other computers in your
house, if you have multiple computers.

It will even scale up smaller computers to match the resolution of
your 17" one.
