Daniel G. - 23 Mar 2008 00:57 GMT Hi All, I recently bought a Gateway ML6720 laptop that came loaded w/Vista Home Premium edition. I'm not sure if I want to keep Vista and may replace it w/XP. Is this possible using the XP install discs that came w/the Dell 8400? Ant tips on how to best do this? I'm no expert w/PCs but am not a novice either. thanks for any input.

The Dell XP disc is usually locked to a specific Dell machine.
Ben Myers - 23 Mar 2008 02:27 GMT Not so. I can pick any random Dell XP install CD I have here and install it on any random Dell computer with matching XP sticker, and, yes it will work perfectly. And then I have to install the hardware drivers for that model of Dell. Unlike other manufacturers who wrap up XP and drivers into a nice little ball, Dell's XP reinstallation CD appears to be almost identical to any other Windows OEM install CD, and Dell supplies (should I say supplied?) an XP driver CD to handle the hardware specific drivers of a given system (or family of similar systems)... Not true, I've used Dell XP Pro CDs to install Windows on non Dell machines (ThinkPads). Worked fine, but you need to enter a valid product key when the time comes. No Dell BIOS = no automatic activation.

Dell 8200, Dell supplied XP upgrade disc (from ME). New hard drive, formatted installed XP using the proper key and it asked for activation.

New hard drive, > formatted installed XP using the proper key and it asked for activation. All Dell upgrade disks require activation as there isn't a built in key. It's only the reinstall ones that have an OEM key built in. In 6 Dells that I've checked they all had the same key, not the keys on the COAs.

Learned that quirk with my 4550.

But the Gateway came with Vista - he'll need a valid XP product key.

Ben Myers - 23 Mar 2008 02:19 GMT Legally, you cannot do so, according to Microsoft. Once you install Dell's XP on your Gateway, you need a legitimate XP product key, too. If your Gateway has one on it, you can enter it via the nice little Keyfinder utility prior to activating XP at the Microsoft web site.
If you do not have a legit Gateway product key, you might as well buy XP in whatever store is still selling it.
Either way, you will also need XP drivers for your laptop. If they are not available from Gateway, you need to determine which chipsets are in your system and download the chipset drivers from the chipset manufacturers' web sites. The important chipsets are motherboard, video, Ethernet, audio, and perhaps wireless. Maybe modem, too. You need to install them pretty much in the order I've given them above, rebooting when XP dumbly and stupidly asks you to.

Ben Myers - 23 Mar 2008 02:23 GMT Correction: You would need to enter the Gateway-supplied product key when asked during the XP install.
Just to make your life exciting, the product key you use MUST agree with the type of XP you are installing, i.e. XP Home with XP Home, XP Pro with XP Pro. Also be aware that there are at least two different versions of XP Home, one with the original series of product keys and one with a new set of product keys, and you cannot mix and match product keys with XP version between them. Same with XP Pro.

He could probably have a private island squirreled away somewhere, or an airplane hangar, etc.
Ben Myers - 24 Mar 2008 19:35 GMT Well, Gates DOES live on a private island out in Puget Sound. He may also own by now one of the many interesting settings from the various James Bond movies. You know. The ones with the lair of the villain... Ben Myers

Ben Myers Right, suggesting Ernst Stavro Blofeld's famous remark "we are now impregnable" in "You Only Live Twice".
Ben Myers - 26 Mar 2008 22:16 GMT Interesting that the Blofeld character ended up with a middle name nearly identical to Telly's younger brother, Stavros, who had hair and played a bit part cop to Telly on TV.
Blofeld is only one of many Bond villains whose profiles fit Gates. Maybe Blofeld as Steve Ballmer, or vice versa? Same hairdo... Ben Myers

Right, listed as "Demosthenes" in the credits for Kojak.
