Jay, I'm not 100% certain but I think the E1505 is similar so I would
think you could use its drivers for xp.   Google around and see if I'm
right then go for it <g>.

thanks for the reply.
i did google and did not come up with anything concrete.
i told the customer to use it with vista, that i couldnt guarantee the
outcome.
and as much as i hate vista,
i have to admit that i liked the coolness of the non-XP software,
like the new media center, the picture slideshow stuff, the new cool
games, the webcam software that lets you record your own pics, or movies
right from the web cam,   the slick aero desktop, etc.
a lot of wow for a seldom computer user.

this inspiron 1525 came fully loaded with vista premium,
and the built in webcamera, 2gb ram, 16gb hd, dvd burner
and it was rather peppy, very impressive indeed.

i couldnt guarantee that if i put XP on it, that the web cam would work
the same, the cool programs that came bundled with vista, etc.  that
would all be lost.  for their purpose it was fine.... they were more
concerned about the learning curve, and i made the windows and menus
confirm to XP as best i could without killing to much of the glitz.

the person also wanted pink, and i have to admit i like the coolness of
the color, and the way the desktop was also blended pink to match.
the paint job was nicer than i remembered people complaining about here.

all in all, a good experience.

See you under your text ...

What software are you referring to that is cool?

>like the new media center,

It's not much different than XP Media Center.  Beyond TV is better
than both of them.

>the picture slideshow stuff,

Havne't tried Vista's slideshow.  What is it used for -- screen saver,
or do you just get a slideshow when using a photo program?

> the new cool
>games,

Solitaire deluxe? ;-)

> the webcam software that lets you record your own pics, or movies

What a concept  :-)

> the slick aero desktop, etc.

Slick -- a waste of resources.  The 3-D navigation is a joke.  So are
thumbnails when over taskbar buttons.  I turn off the poorly designed
glass "features" and enjoy the clean look of Vista Basic.

>a lot of wow for a seldom computer user.

Truly the first time I've heard Wow from a user's mouth -- usually I
just hear it from MS Marketing.

I guess I said "wow" though.  Wow, I can't believe  it works, not wow,
for the features.

Anyway, maybe I'll learn about Vista features I am not aware of, like
the cool new games.

Oh, by the way.  Your user runs Vista Premium which means it can't
accept Remote Desktop requests for computers to connect to it.

You could get Vista Business but then your user would give up Media
Center.

dont get me wrong, i'm not a big fan of vista.
i'm fine with the productivity of XP for me.
i usually deal with business customers.

but i never had a web cam before, so it was a little exciting to see a
nice quality picture on a tiny cam mounted in the top of the laptop that
worked flawlessly out of the box.
the client's daughter loved it, and if the client is happy, then i'm
happy, and i can charge for sitting there showingf them all these wow
things that make them happy.
the thought of installing XP on there was scary because of lack of
immediate driver support, and i couldnt guarantee that the screens would
look as pretty (since they were already spoiled with vista)
and the XP MediaCenter doesnt work as nice as the Vista equivalent.
also i may not have been able to install the webcam software and all the
other cute programs into XP.

and sure, i was impressed with the new games...
i played the paintball game for hours.

I agree. I like the colors as a means of personalization and a change from
the more boring black/white/grays of the past.

The pink and yellow models almost guarantee it'll never be lost.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but only the XPS laptops like
the 13" one was actually painted.

I have nothing against colored laptops, in fact I like them (blue
would be nice).  The XPS 13" one though was actually painted, and for
some colors, when there were problems, Dell said it was because it
needed more layers of paint (I think the white ones had the problem
and needed 5 or 7 layers).

When those laptops first came out and the product manager was
describing them, he spent a disproportionate amount of time talking
about the nice paint job on the laptops.  Very funny indeed.

I had a chance to see colored XPS painted laptops and colored
Inspirons at a Dell kiosk and could barely tell the difference.

Excerpts from one web page:
http://tinyurl.com/22jpkb

"The finish on the XPS M1330 is similar to a custom paint job on a
car, but with one additional complexity—on a car, typical viewing
occurs from several feet away. With a notebook, the typical viewing
range is much closer... sometimes a foot or less. This requires a
different level of attention to detail.... There was no problem
painting hundreds at a time. But as we increased the volume, otherwise
manageable factors like dust contamination caused our successful
yields to decrease. Adding to the complexity, the Crimson Red and the
Pearl White colors require more coats of paint and more touches to
create the finished product—that means there is more opportunity for
dust contamination."

Hmm, I wonder, since it's simlar to a car if I can get rustproofing
and paint sealant  :-)

It's not the colors that are the problem, but the actual "painting" of
them on the XPS M1330 that has had people complaining.

I don't know the answer, but on my black Inspiron 1420, it 'appears' to
be a paint finish, rather than a black plastic.  My Latitude X1 appears
to actually have a black plastic cover (the entire laptop is black)

Hmm, maybe the Inspirons are painted too.  I haven't heard anything
about paint problems so maybe Dell has worked out the kinks.  Maybe
they hired a lot more umpa-lumpas to paint the laptops on the assembly
line.

I _really_ miss my Latitude X61 which was stolen.

Dell now use standard parts, even PSU's in the desktops are standard, so the
chipset drivers will be the same on other laptops, as will the modem, nic
card , lan, and video they will all be used on another machine
Ben Myers - 30 Mar 2008 00:09 GMT
Yes, so what the OP needs to do is determine the manufacturers of the chipsets
in the Inspiron 1525, then go to the manufacturers' web sites to find and
download the drivers.

I admit to not having seen all the recent motherboard chipsets, especially ones
that support AMD CPUs, but all the ones I have seen do have XP drivers.   Same
with standard Intel, ATI, or nVidia video, Intel, Realtek (rarely used by Dell),
Atheros and Broadcom network, and mostly ADI 198x audio... Ben Myers
