trying to make a back up copy of my dell Vista ultimate disk which i am
allowed to do, however if i try and burn it to an ordinary dvd no matter
which writer i use the disk always ends up as a coaster with the "illegal
disk" failed error, however if i burn to a RW dvd it burns ok, now one would
think it's a media fault, but no that burns other stuff ok, it might br DRM
but ultimate allows you to make a back up copy (i made an ISO as well and
tried that but just the same) so now I'm totally baffled

FWIW, during the Beta days, many people reported problems buring a Vista DVD
from the .iso image.
the usual reccomendation then was that many burners had issues at normal
buring speeds when creating the Vista DVD. They were told to slow down the
burning speed as much as possible, down to 2x or even 1x if you could.

That's a good idea. The problem sounds drive-related, imo......
(*Though I've not had any issues burning Vista .iso's to DVD-R, or +R
media.)

Are you making sure that the disk you are burning is finalized so that no
further burns may be made to it? This sounds like there could be an issue
with the burning utility that is being used to create your OS backup. In
addition, this is usually a one-time only process. I have seen this fail on
other computers. A couple of Compaq's and a Toshiba come to mind.

it's a one time process only if you burn a disc from the restore info on the
hard drive. He is trying to make a copy of his installation disc.

Fixer, just a wild guess but does it make any difference if you copy
first to a virtual cd? Not really sure this would matter :( but it
would eliminate the problem if it is a drive problem (I think) .

yes but if it was a drive problem then it wouldn't work with a RW disk and
as it does the same on both DVD writers the chances of them both being
faulty with the same fault from different manufacturers is in fitesimal,
personnally i think that its a Nero problem and this damn DRM

Probably right. I hate those kinda problems..... you will have to
eliminate the variables one by one. Check Google with Vista install
problems and ____ (fill in the blank with your dvd writers, then
Nero and version number and then DRM) and see what you might be able
to read. Perhaps someone else has had a similar problem and their
replies might at least if not answer your question, at least eliminate
some of the variables so you can figure it out. Sorry I can't help on
this one much :( .

FWIW:
- I've burned my copies of Vista using Nero Express 6/7 on machines running
both XP Home and Pro SP2.
I've tried nothing outside of that narrow range of OS and versions.

Could you post the complete Nero error log (sans registration key)?
