I have a Dell Latitude D620 notebook that I suspect is overheating.  I
was wondering if there is a utility that I can use to monitor the
temperature.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

There is, normally, but it's typically motherboard or processor
specific.  If you have an Intel CPU, you might try to find the Intel
"TAT" program (TAT = Thermal Analysis Tool).  It reads the actual
temperature sensor inside the CPU chip.

There are only two reasons a CPU will normally over heat:  The "thermal
solution" is installed wrong (and if it was ok, this likely isn't a
problem), or more likely, the fan and heatsink are clogged with hair and
dust.  This is common (especially on laptops), and it's a
straightforward fix .... open up the laptop enough to clean out the
heatsink & fan with compressed air.  Sometimes this can be done entirely
from outside, you can always do a better job with some disassembly, but
the amount and difficulty vary greatly.  Most laptops need this every 6
to 12 months.

I suggest that you download, install and run I8KFANGUI30.EXE, originally written
for hot-running Inspiron 8000-series notebooks, but it generally works well on
most Dell notebooks.   It monitors temperature and allows you to control the
speeds of the internal cooling fans... Ben Myers
