I was configuring a new Inspiron 1420.  One option is '3GB Datasafe
online storage -- free for a year'

None [subtract $9]
Free 3GB DataSafe Online Backup for 1Year [Included in Price]
10GB DataSafe Online Backup for 1 Year [add $10]
Dell Recommended
DataSafe Online Backup 20GB [add $20]

But if you don't select it, the price drops by $9.

Seems like free really isn't free.

Oh that's funny.  Hopefully the folks on the DataSafe side are more
competent.  Not that I would entrust online backups to an opaque
service and proprietary, closed source client software.  Even assuming
there are no bugs and everything that should be encrypted is encrypted
before being sent out, the fact of the matter is one may never know
whether that encrypted data is compromised and if so by whom.  IMO
one should operate on the assumption that the encrypted data *will*
be leaked, and therefore it needs to be extremely strongly encrypted
so that it "cannot" be decrypted using not only today's powerful tools
and techniques, but tomorrow's and far into the future.  In addition to
the potential for compromise there is the reality of backups which are
totally beyond one's control.  One can *never* reliably delete the
data caught up in such a backup.  Such things may not be an issue for
some users, but given there is no going back, all should be very very
thoughtful and carefull when it comes to this sort of thing.

Sure it's free.  They're just giving you $9 off if you opt not to make them
reserve the storage space for you.

You might be a big looser who, say, has eleventy billion terrabytes of
personal storage on your home network.

Not that there's anything wrong with that or that you personally know anyone
even approximating that description.

I'm glad to see the sarcasm wasn't lost entirely.  heh

I saw an ad on TV for a Dell desktop system, and they included as one
of their "features" that it comes with a Free Trial Version of
anti-virus (I forgot which one).
Ben Myers - 29 Jun 2007 00:20 GMT
Free trails of anti-virus software are all the rage now from every name brand.
If you buy a boxed retail Intel mobo, you get one, too.   Whoopty-doo!   But
you'd be surprised at how many people end up buying because the trailware is
already there... Ben Myers

Trails or trials ?  <g>
I agree with you and it might be justified for the reason that most
people are not that knowledgable about this stuff  and they feel as
long as it was okay, might as well stay with the same.   Probably some
of it is founded because either they are afraid to uninstall the old
software and install the new software or don't know what else to
consider.  It's only us geeks that are not afraid to mess with this
stuff and/or know what else to consider  :)   .
Ben Myers - 29 Jun 2007 04:03 GMT
Well, you take your computer out on the trail to try out the software.
Trailware.  Also the rage.  :>)   That's what they put in cell phones.   There
are also versions of cityware for city dwellers, rather than the cowpokes and
backpackers who use trailware.   Or is it that my fingers are no longer all that
nimble?

Converting trialware is oh, so easy.  Beats going to the store and buying a
retail package for the same price, with the security of actually having the CD
media, just in case.   Then, oops!   The download does not install properly for
whatever reason, and the buyer is done in... Ben Myers

You almost lost me Ben but I held on <g>  !!

Hi!

> Or is it that my fingers are no longer all that nimble?

Maybe you're being forced to use something other than a Model M?

:-)

William
Ben Myers - 30 Jun 2007 00:38 GMT
Nope.  They'll bury me clutching a Model M in my claws... Ben
