Hello, my name is Walter Maldonado. I am 15 years old and have
intermediate expertise in computing, except today when I had a
problem. I need an expert's hand with this. I installed a 802.11g
Wireless PCI card perfectly in my system, and I started having a
problem after that. My 4860 has Windows 2000 SP4 on it running
perfectly. I bought this computer myself with my own money and wanted
to link it up wirelessly with the rest of my family's network. After I
plugged everything back in and closed the case, the computer was
starting to boot, and then it was on the Windows 2000 screen on the
2nd blue block for a LONG time... It didn't even budge for about a
1/2 hour. I opened up the case to see if I did anything worng. I
reviewed everything inside the computer. I don't know what could
possibly be the problem. Is it the PCI slots themselves... I would
like an answer on how to fix this/an alternate solution to this
problem

Walter,
The 4800 Series Presarios are notorious for difficulty in seating the riser
card in its slot on the motherboard. Try lifting the card cage from the
motherboard and reseating the card in the slot. You must push down HARD. You
should hear and feel a definite "SNAP" when the card edge properly seats in
the slot. If the card IS seated, the problem might be that wireless card you
bought may require a later version of PCI slot than the one in your
Presario.
However, I'd bet it is a riser card seating issue.

If the PCI version is the problem, does that mean I need an alternate
way of connecting wirelessly?? Is so, how can I.. I don't know if USB
can help... i need some ideas...

Most likely and pretty sure within 99% certainty it is the PCI version of
the
card.
Your board does not support the newer version and the 802.11G requires PCI
A 802.11b will work if your wireless router is backwards compatible
A USB adapter will also work for B and G but I need to know
the USB version from your manual.

The 4800s only had USB 1.0

What version is your PCI bus from your manual
Or use Sandra utility downloadable from www.zdnet.com
It will tell me your PCI version and the actual USB version
There are need for a correct answer.
There are 802.11B for USB 1.0

Well, I wanna really thank you guys for your help. I had to leave the
PCI card in the computer I wanted it for, a Emachines T1120... I was
hoping the transfer would work because, I got this 4860 as a "present"
and I revived it. I put W2K Servce Pack 4 and everything's all dandy. I
decided to waste $40 at my local Wal-Mart and bought a Belkin 802.11g
Wireless USB adapter because I think the PCI doesn't work period... I
tried a USB 2.0 Controller with 5 ports (4 external, 1 internal) and
THAT didn't even work, so my only expansions for the PC are the RAM
which I'll do eventually and some cheap USB printer, scanner, and any
other peripheral out there. Once again, thank you guys for the help...
I really appreciated it

Walmart will take back the item you bought (no questions asked)
You need to get a usb controller card if you have no ports that is USB 1.1
not 2.0 chances are your bus will not support the 2.0
You can get it to work
Did you download sandra fron zdnet as I asked
This will tell me everything you need
