All

I want to connect a GPS serial cable to the rear serial port on my
1710smi. The port seems to be configured as part of the touch pad/mouse
control system because when I plug in the cable the mouse pointer starts
random movements. How can I reconfigure the port to accept serial data
from the GPS?

TIA

I had the same problem with an Acer and a Compaq under WinXP and
Win2000. I found out that the GPS receiver was recognized as "Micorsoft
Track Ball Input Device" Then I deleted this entry out of the hardware
configuration table in the system configuration menue (Sorry, I do not
know the original english terms as I use the german versions) Thereafter
the GPS receiver worked properly. I had a Garmin GPS 12, which uses the
common NMEA protocol.

Hi Frank

Thanks for your reply.
As soon as I had posted my query I decided to check the system/hardware
settings and bingo there was the trackball device listed - as you
describe I just disabled it and the serial port is working properly.
